Knowing very little of French history, I was quite surprised to find so many towns and villages, like Die, which date from Roman times, with churches and other public
buildings still standing (like Die's Cathedral of Notre Dame) from the twelfth century. And yet, the history is simply a part of the way of life, rather than
something dressed up for tourist consumption. Which is precisely what makes much of the French countryside so enchanting and authentic.
